The Hedgehog Signaling Pathway in Vertebrates ?

چکیده
The hedgehog signaling pathway is a mechanism that regulates cell growth and differentiation [4] during embryonic development, called embryogenesis [5], in animals. The hedgehog signaling pathway works both between cells and within individual cells. The hedgehog gene ( hh) was observed in fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster [6]) in 1980, and later in vertebrates in 1993. Unlike flies, which have one hh gene, vertebrates have several hh genes [7]. The hedgehog signaling pathway controls a wide range of developmental processes in the vertebrate embryo, and researchers found that dysfunction in the hedgehog signaling pathway leads to birth defects [8] including extra digits, cyclopia [9] with one eye and no forebrain [10], and cancers in adults and juveniles.

The role of the desert hedgehog signaling pathway during degeneration and regeneration of peripheral nerves
The desert hedgehog (Dhh) signaling pathway is involved in the development of peripheral nerves (PNs). Dhh-null mice show abnormal neuronal development and perineurial barrier function. As it was previously shown that dhh is mainly expressed in developmental nerves and Sonic hedgehog protein (dhh homologous) has therapeutic effects in neuronal survival, we attempted to investigate the possible ...

متن کاملNot lost in space: trafficking in the hedgehog signaling pathway.
Compartmentalization within cells provides spatial organization of signaling pathways and ensures the specificity of signaling. In vertebrates, the primary cilium, a tiny microtubule-based protrusion present on most cells, is essential for organizing events during Hedgehog signal transduction. When cells are stimulated with Hedgehog ligands, proteins in the pathway move in and out of the cilia....
متن کاملThe you Gene Encodes an EGF-CUB Protein Essential for Hedgehog Signaling in Zebrafish
Hedgehog signaling is required for many aspects of development in vertebrates and invertebrates. Misregulation of the Hedgehog pathway causes developmental abnormalities and has been implicated in certain types of cancer. Large-scale genetic screens in zebrafish have identified a group of mutations, termed you-class mutations, that share common defects in somite shape and in most cases disrupt ...

The hedgehog signaling pathway is a mechanism that directs the development of embryonic cells in animals, from invertebrates to vertebrates. The hedgehog signaling pathway is a system of genes [5] and gene products, mostly proteins, that convert one kind of signal into another, called transduction. In 1980, Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard [6] and Eric F. Wieschaus, at the European Molecular Biology...
